What Color Sea Glass Is Rarest?

Posted by Lita Sea Glass Jewelry on 31st Aug 2023

For sea glass enthusiasts like me, there is a thrill in finding what the waves have in store.

You never really know what you'll find—and that's the beauty in it. But undoubtedly the excitement doubles when rare sea glass pieces washes ashore!

Sea glass pieces are becoming rarer in general, but one hue stands out when it comes to rarity: the elusive and coveted red.

The Rarity of Red

Red sea glass is widely regarded as the rarest of them all.

The scarcity can be traced back to the past when production of red glass was not as high as the other colors.

Red glass was typically used in limited quantities for specialty items such as warning lights, lanterns, or decorative glassware.

These are objects that are not easily discarded, so there was also a lesser chance for them to end up in the ocean to become sea glass.

Historically, it was also costly to produce as gold additive was needed to make red-colored glass.

Other Rare Sea Glass Colors

While red sea glass reigns as the rarest, there are several other colors that are also highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts.

Among these are shades like cobalt blue, orange, and yellow.

Cobalt blue sea glass originates from early milk of magnesia bottles and certain types of ink bottles.

Orange and yellow sea glass can often be traced back to vintage art glass or tableware. These colors were never mass produced, unlike greens and browns which are common colors for drinks even today.

Multi-colored sea glass pieces (aka multies) are also very rare and highly sought-after because of their unique patterns and playful colors.

Preserving and Cherishing

In the world of sea glass, rarity adds a touch of mystique and intrigue.

While the quest for the rarest colors may be challenging, the stories these sea gems tell and the connections they forge with the past make the journey well worth the effort.

One way of preserving these beach-found pieces is to recreate them into meaningful jewelry which you can wear close to your heart.

Here at Lita Sea Glass Jewelry, we believe in the importance of responsible collecting.
